Aluminum Van Cabinet Plans for Sprinter & Transit

You can buy measured plans for the aluminum cabinets we build right here. Thrive Overland is a van and truck camper shop in Utah, and these are our own cabinet designs, drawn up so you can build them yourself.

Each plan is a PDF with detailed drawings, assembly instructions, and a parts list. You use the list to order extrusions pre-cut to length, plus all the hardware. There are plans for a kitchen galley, an upper cabinet, a microwave cabinet, a plumbing cabinet, and an electrical cabinet. The lower cabinets fit every Mercedes Sprinter, plus the Ford Transit 148 and 148 Extended, and the kitchen galley fits the Ram ProMaster too. The upper and microwave cabinets are for the Sprinter.

What's in every Thrive cabinet plan

Every plan comes with the same core pieces. You buy it, download it, and start ordering parts.

  • Detailed drawings of the cabinet in PDF
  • Step-by-step assembly instructions
  • A parts list for ordering aluminum extrusions pre-cut to length
  • Every piece of hardware the cabinet needs, listed

You don't have to cut the aluminum yourself. The parts list is set up so the extrusions arrive at length. We recommend TNutz for the aluminum because it costs much less, and the parts list links straight to their site. If you'd rather use 80/20 brand extrusion, that works too.

The TNutz links in our parts lists are affiliate links, so we may earn a small commission when you order through them.

These are digital downloads. All sales are final, and there are no refunds on digital products.

The cabinets and how they fit together

We designed the cabinets to work as a set. The galley sits on the driver side. On a high-roof Sprinter 144, the upper cabinet and microwave cabinet go above it. The plumbing and electrical cabinets sit at the back and make a bed platform together. You can build one cabinet or all of them.

Kitchen galley plans

The galley is about 60" long, 22" deep, and 36" tall. It goes on the driver side and fits an Isotherm CR130 refrigerator. You can modify it for a different fridge. It has a bank of four drawers plus a drawer above the fridge. It works in every Sprinter (high or low roof, 144 or 170), the Transit 148 and 148 Extended, and the ProMaster.

The kitchen galley plans are $149.95.

The galley plans give you the drawer dimensions and a source for purchasing the drawer boxes, drawer slides, and all the hardware. We also have a video on mounting the drawer slides to the galley.

Jeff walks through the galley build in this video.

Upper cabinet plans (Sprinter high roof)

The upper cabinet is about 90" long, 12" deep, and 12" tall, drawn for the high-roof Mercedes Sprinter 144 and 170. It doesn't fit a low-roof Sprinter, the Transit, or the ProMaster. On a Sprinter 144, it goes on the driver side with our microwave cabinet. On a Sprinter 170, it goes on the passenger side. It also works as a standalone cabinet.

Need it shorter? Order shorter bars and you can change the length and the openings. The height and depth stay the same.

The upper cabinet plans also include printable templates for the ABS dividers and liners. Print them out and use them to cut those pieces to size.

The upper cabinet plans are $99.95.

Microwave cabinet plans (Contoure RV-787 or GE 3-in-1)

There are two versions. Pick the one that matches your microwave.

  • 3-in-1 microwave cabinet. For Mercedes Sprinter only. It fits the GE 3-in-1 microwave, convection oven, and air fryer, not the Contoure.

Both pair with the upper cabinet or work on their own. Each microwave cabinet plan is on sale for $49 (regularly $75).

It's drawn for the Sprinter driver side, and you can mirror it for the passenger side. It works in the Transit 148 and 148 Extended. It doesn't fit the ProMaster.

Sprinter van overhead cabinets

If you're searching for Sprinter van overhead cabinets, start with our upper cabinet plans. They're drawn for the high-roof Mercedes Sprinter 144 and 170 only. They don't fit a low-roof Sprinter, a Transit, or a ProMaster.

The upper cabinet is about 90" long, 12" deep, and 12" tall. On a Sprinter 144, it goes on the driver side with our microwave cabinet. On a Sprinter 170, it goes on the passenger side. It also works as a standalone overhead cabinet.

Need it shorter? Order shorter bars and you can change the length and the openings. Height and depth stay the same. The plans include printable templates for the ABS dividers and liners.

Pair it with a microwave cabinet if you want one:

  • Contoure RV-787 microwave cabinet (high-roof Sprinter 144 and 170)
  • GE 3-in-1 microwave cabinet (Sprinter)

Both microwave cabinets pair with the upper or work on their own. The microwave itself (Contoure) can go in any van. The cabinet plan is Sprinter-only.

Below the overheads, the kitchen galley, plumbing cabinet, and electrical cabinet fit every Sprinter, high or low roof, 144 or 170. On a Sprinter 144, the galley, upper, and microwave share the driver-side wall. The plumbing and electrical cabinets sit at the back and make a bed platform together.

Ford Transit cabinets

For Ford Transit cabinets, use the lower-cabinet plans. The kitchen galley, plumbing cabinet, and electrical cabinet all fit the Transit 148 and 148 Extended.

  • Kitchen galley: about 60" long, 22" deep, 36" tall, driver side, sized for an Isotherm CR130 (modifiable for other fridges)
  • Plumbing cabinet: about 56" × 17" × 31", 36-gallon over-wheel-well tank and Isotherm Spa 15
  • Electrical cabinet: about 56" × 15.5" × 31", two Epoch Essential 300Ah batteries or similar

Put the plumbing and electrical cabinets across from each other, add four 15-series bars, and they make a bed platform.

What doesn't fit a Transit: our aluminum upper cabinet plans and both microwave cabinet plans. Those are Sprinter-only. For overhead storage in a Transit, use ready-made options instead of our upper plans.

Why we build cabinets from aluminum extrusion

A T-slot aluminum frame bolts together. If you need to change a length, you change a bar. The upper cabinet plan is set up for exactly that.

Our parts lists spec TNutz extrusion because it costs much less than the name brands. You can use 80/20 brand extrusion instead if you prefer it. (The TNutz links are affiliate links.)

Measured shop plans vs a generic 80/20 tutorial

There are good free tutorials out there. Most show one person's van, with a cut list for their own layout. You work out the hardware, the appliance fit, and how it all meets up.

Our plans start from a different place.

  • They're sized to named parts: the Isotherm CR130 fridge, the Contoure RV-787 or GE 3-in-1 microwave, a 36-gallon over-wheel-well tank, an Isotherm Spa 15, and two 300Ah batteries.
  • They're designed to fit together. On a Sprinter 144, the galley, upper, and microwave cabinets share the driver-side wall. The plumbing and electrical cabinets make a bed platform.
  • The parts list covers pre-cut extrusions and all the hardware, so you're not sourcing bolts one at a time.

If you enjoy designing from scratch, a tutorial is a fine start. If you'd rather build from a measured set, these are ours.

Mounting and thermal break: wall spacers

Aluminum carries heat and cold well. So builders put a thermal break between the cabinet frame and the van wall. Our Wall Spacers for Cabinets do that job.

A set has 24 spacers, each 1" x 1" with a 1/4" hole. You get six each in 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" thicknesses.

Electrical cabinet hardware: Lynx spacer and jumper

Two small parts help if you're running a Victron Lynx distributor.

Prefer ready-made overhead cabinets?

Not everyone wants to build uppers. We also carry finished cabinets from partner brands.
